Statistics on Dog & Bear Attacks

Statistics:

4.5 million Dog Attacks yearly.

I love dogs so it is hard to believe there are even fatal attacks.  Irresponsible owners are the cause of most dog attack incidence.  The problem exists because owners fail to control, supervise, maintain and train the dog.  A dog is only as dangerous as an owner allows it to be.

More than 20 Killed by Bears since 2000.

Statistics show a sharp increase in violent bear encounters. Humans are encroaching on the bears natural territory so the bears are fighting for their homes.  Nearly 2/3 of fatal black bear attacks in the 20th century have occurred in the last 10 years.  Over development has taken over the black bears natural habitat resulting in more aggressive behavior than the norm.

The Lastest Bear Attacks

On June 22, 2007 Chris Everhart and his 3 sons were camping in the Chattahoochee National Forest in northern Georgia when  a bear took the family's cooler and was leaving the area  when the youngest son, six-year-old Logan, hurled a shovel at it.

The bear then dropped the cooler and started toward the boy.  Everhart, an ex-marine, grabbed a log.

"(I) threw it at it and it happened to hit the bear in the head," The Father said. "I thought it just knocked it (the bear) out, but it actually ended up killing the bear."

Everhart was given a ticket for failing to secure his campsite, said Ken Riddleberger, a region supervisor for game management with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

"We've not had an attack in Georgia," Riddleberger said. "The key is  do not have your garbage or food available. If we manage our food, we won't have bears around."

The same weekend an 11-year-old boy was killed by a black bear while camping in a forest in Utah. Sam Ives was found mauled to death after he was pulled screaming from his tent in the Uinta National Forest, about 50 kilometres southeast of Salt Lake City.

Authorities said it was the first recorded fatal attack by a black bear in that state. His family said there was no food in the tent to attract a bear.

Bear Attack is Rare But

April 14, 2006 Benton, Tennessee

A black bear picked up a 2 year old in it's mouth, mauled the mother and killed a 6 year old sister as she tried to run away. YOU CANNOT outrun a bear. The family was at a pool below Benton Falls when the bear attacked.  The mother and other visitors tried to fend off the bear with sticks and rocks.  Later when they found the bear standing over the six year old, someone fired a small caliber handgun and evidently frightened it away.  The mother and 2 year old were air lifted to a medical center in Chattanooga, Tennesee.

In May of 2000 a woman was a attacked and killed by a black bear near Gatlinburg, Tennesee.  She was a school teacher who was walking on a trail near a Smoky Mountain camp ground and was attack by 2 female bears.

AVOID WILD ANIMALS

AVOID BEAR ENCOUNTERS

Give wild animals freedom and plenty of room.  Surprised animals can be dangerous animals.  For your own Protection, please consider the information below.

  • Be alert at all times. Bears are active both day and night and can be found anywhere. Keep your eyes open.
  • Avoid surprising bears. They may think of you as a threat.
  • Make plenty of noises as you walk to warn bears that you are there. Be especially careful in  brush, where you cannot see clearly, and along rivers, where bears cannot hear you because of rushing water noise.
  • Never approach a bear.  Give them plenty of space.

If You Encounter a Bear:

Don't Run:

  • Running may cause a bear to chase you.
  • You cannot outrun a bear as  they can run faster than 30 mph.
  • If the bear doesn't know you are there, keep it that way.
  • But if attacked, many people have escaped by playing dead.

BACK AWAY SLOWLY

When the bear becomes aware of you, but has not acted in an aggressive way,

  • speak quietly and calmly while waving your arms slowly above your head.
  • Make yourself appear as big as you can.
  • Bears that stand up on their hind legs are not necessarily threatening you, but trying to find out what you are up to.

IF A BEAR SHOULD COME TOWARD YOU, DO NOT RUN OR  DROP YOUR PACK !

  • Bears will sometimes  come within close proximity to a person and then just simply leave.
  • If you drop  your pack,  the bear may think your are giving him  food.
  • STAND STILL when the bear moves away, then slowly back off.

IF AN ATTACK OCCURS; YOU SHOULD PLAY DEAD.

  • Curl up into a ball with your knees tucked into your stomach,
  • your hands laced around the back of your neck.
  • Leave your pack on to protect your back and vital organs
  • If the attack continues, you should fight back.

AN UNPROVOKED ATTACK: (For example if you are sleeping  and you feel a bear scratching or biting through your tent)  YOU SHOULD FIGHT BACK!

REPORT ALL BEAR INCIDENTS TO A RANGER!
Park rangers need this information to keep track of the bear population and behavior.

A Fed Bear May Become a Dead Bear

  • Giving a bear human food or garbage  will cause it to seek  more.
  • Then  the bear becomes a threat, and it may have to be destroyed.
  • It is against the law to feed bears on purpose or leaving garbage where bears can find it.
  • Store your food and garbage in special animal resistant containers.
  • Cook and keep food at least 100 yards downwind from your camping area where you can see in all directions.
  • Bears have a tremendous sense of smell so be on the alert for bears looking for food.
  • Put all food away immediately after using it.  Avoid cooking greasy or odorous foods.  Do not sleep in the same clothes you wore while cooking.
  • Keep a clean camp by putting all garbage in  animal proof containers.

Firearms and bear repellent sprays:

  • Guns should never be used as an alternative to common sense and sound bear avoidance principles.
  • Guns are only to be used for protection as a last resort when an attack is imminent.
  • Bears will sometime approach to within 10 feet before turning and running away.
  • Only in Alaska is it legal to shoot a bear in defense of life or property and then only if you have made efforts to avoid problems in the first place.
  • Note: In the event a bear is killed for self-protection, you are required to take the skull and properly skinned hide to the proper Alaskan authorities.  Further information on these regulations are available from the Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game.

PEPPER SPRAY:

  • Defensive aerosol sprays which contain oleoresin capsicum (red pepper extract) have been effectively used as a protection against bear attacks.
  • It is easy to carry and has a range of up to 6-8 yards.
  • You must handle it carefully - if sprayed upwind, it may blow back into your face and disable you.
  • Most often, the bear has gotten your scent from the wind blowing in his direction.
  • Always make sure the safety is in place.
  • While transporting it in a vehicle or a light plane it should be in an air tight container lest it discharge and disable the driver or pilot.
  • Check your pepper spray to make sure it is in working order.
  • With a good safety, accidental discharge is extremely rare.
  • Make sure when you test your pepper spray you leave the area, as it may act as an attraction rather than a repellent.

Can Pepper Spray Make a Difference?

What Pepper Spray can do against ferocious dogs

The sign in the window read "Beware of Dog"  but it should have said "Beware of Dogs" as 5 pit bulls lived there.

A teenager learned the meaning of terror on that Friday.  Screaming and sobbing for help the victim was mauled.  Witnesses said this continued even while police officers tried to rescue him.

The dogs pursued the victim  easily vaulted a low chain link fence and trapped him on the neighbor's front porch.  Afraid to open the door, men inside the house came out the rear and tried to stop the attack.

The police came and  waded in with their nightsticks.  Only after the officers began pepper spraying the dogs did the attack end.  The attack left the 15 year old with serious injuries.

Fights Between Dogs -- How to Avoid and Stop Them

Quick tips for avoiding and stopping fights between dogs.

Some breeds are more inclined to fight or protect, dogs of any breed can get into fights.  A dog who is not well-socialized may have dominant body language and stare other dogs right in the eyes, which is a direct challenge.

Don't make the mistake in assuming your dog won't fight.  Dogs aren't necessarily aggressive when they're off a leash, but will tend to lunge, bark and posture when they are on a leash.

Avoid frightening conflicts by staying alert. Keep your dog on a short leash and in control at all times. It is good not to allow a dog to look or sniff other dogs.

Teaching a dog from a pup that he can't visit with other dogs  is one good way to prevent aggressive behavior. Teach the dog not to pull on the leash, and to sit and wait for permission. Basic obedience training with positive reinforcement can help prevent fights.

Along with leashing and good training, owners can avoid conflicts by neutering young dogs before a year old, and socializing their dogs while they are a puppy between six to eight weeks of age.

Often you can spot behaviors that signal trouble, so be alert using this time to keep a fight from breaking out.

* A hard, directed stare at your dog.
* Dominance posturing, such as mounting.
* Stiff body movements.
* Extreme body language: the tail held stiffly up or down, lips pulled tight against the teeth.

If you should face an aggressive dog, you might shout "NO!" to stop him. If the dog continues to come toward you, drastic measures may be needed. You might carry a stun gun, which they should aim into the air, not at the dog. The stun gun hits sound frequencies that a dogs can hear, which can stop a dog from fighting. Another technique is to spray cayenne pepper at the dog's nose and eyes.

Dogs tend to establish a social hierarchy.  Fighting to determine who is predominent can involve barking and growling. Intense fighting can take place, where a dog latches onto the other dog injuring him. Fights also can be silent.

If you try to stop the fight, do not put your hands anywhere near the dogs' heads or get between them to avoid getting bitten yourself. If another person is available, it is recommended each person picks a dog and grabs its tail or hind legs, pulling back and up until the dog loosens its grip. The grabber should then move away quickly. There is risk, since dogs will sometimes turn and bite whoever is hanging on to them.

Prevention, of course, is the best approach. Prevention meaning keep your dog safe and make your dog know who is in charge.  This is the most important job a dog owner has.

Recent Horror Stories About Dog Attacks

Last June  Susan Putz-Drury was leisurely jogging through her neighborhood. Suddenly, she hear fierce growling. Before you know it, she was beset by a pack of 6 snarling dogs.  She fought for her life, trying to keep her attackers from dragging her to the ground.   Miraculously, she was saved when a passerby drove his car into the wild pack, running them off. Susan still bears the scars from the 83 stitches and 15 staples it took doctors to seal her wounds.  The owner of the dogs was fined a measly $50.

James Chapple, a 59-year-old Memphis man was attacked by two pit bulls on February 9. A bystander saved Chapple’s life by fighting off the beasts with a piece of pipe—but not before the pit bulls tore off Chapple’s left arm. As of today, Chapple is hospitalized, receiving intensive therapy in an attempt to save his remaining arm.

Dianna Acklen. Last May,  a 60-year-old Franklin County librarian was attacked and killed by vicious dogs while she was taking her daily walk. Investigators estimated the dogs bit her over 300 times.

These are just a few of the incidence that happened this year that reveal the need of protection as you are out.

Keep your keys in your hand and on your keys carry Pepper Spray.

Can Pepper Spray protect you against snakes?

"This may come to those who use pepper spray as a shock but I found out one time while I was fishing that it also works on rattle snakes. When I sprayed the rattle snake in the eyes it started coiling up and rolling around all over the place, I could not believe it but I was real glad I had my pepper spray with me."

This is a direct quote from a fellow preacher Jerry Miller.

Pepper Spray Protection from Aggressive Animals

There are small animals like squarrels, skunks, bats, and rabbits as well as cats  that can be infected with  rabies.   In the news lately there have been about 6 cats that have been infected just in the Greenville, South Carolina area.  If you see an animal who is acting strangely aggressive, stay away from them.  If one should bite you the virus travels up the spinal cord to the brain.  Rabies (Latin, rabies, "madness, rage, fury") is a viral zoonotic disease that causes acute encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in mammals. In non-vaccinated humans, rabies is almost invariably fatal after neurological symptoms have developed, but prompt post-exposure vaccination may prevent the virus from progressing. There are only six reported cases of a person surviving rabies after the onset of symptoms.

Warn your children the danger of approaching animals they do not know.  My granddaughter Lydia got bit by a kitten.  She ended up going to the doctor.  My grandson Eric got bit by a squarrel that he was trying to feed.

Have your Pepper Spray ready for your Protection.

Martial Arts Instructor Jerry Miller states, "One day I was walking down the street and I was attacked by a doberman pincher! Ever try to use martial arts on a dog. I was really glad I had my pepper spray. I am a master of severial martial arts yet I still think it's wiser and safer to carry pepper spray."

One or our friends wrote to me about her use of Pepper Spray. "Thankfully I have only used mine on an aggressive dog, but for a LONG time after that I only had to raise my hand (without the can, even!) and the dog ran away from me whimpering!"
